Emerging Research in Infectious Disease
Tulane’s Emerging Research in Infectious Disease Fund provides support to develop vaccines, create effective testing and devise new treatments. By supporting Tulane’s promising research and clinical enterprise, your gift will help our scientists make discoveries now that will help us far into the future.
Why are donations necessary?
The past five years has demonstrated how vital emerging research in infectious diseases is for all of us. In the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tulane was one of the first universities in the country to receive the live virus.
At that time, Tulane University’s Vice President for Research Dr. Giovanni Piedimonte said, “This virus is unforgiving … The only possible solution is that we find new ways to diagnose it rapidly in a very large portion of the population and we find a safe and effective vaccine or therapy.” Tulane rose to the challenge adroitly, developing a rapid COVID-19 saliva test that can be read by smartphone and a highly sensitive blood test that can detect the virus even when infections are missed by nasal swab PCR tests.
Tulane has been on the front lines of fighting infectious diseases since our earliest days. From cholera and yellow fever to Ebola and COVID-19, Tulane has led the charge. Today, our work is more important than ever.
