Tulane's Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) supports law students engaging in public interest work by providing networking opportunities, mentorship, grants, and more. PILF provides a myriad of opportunities for students to connect with public interest organizations across New Orleans and beyond, while also providing practical financial support so that members can engage in work that they are passionate about without worrying about financial burdens.
PILF's annual WaveStarter campaign is absolutely vital for the survival of our Public Interest Summer Grant Program. This program provides modest stipends to students who are engaging in meaningful public interest work over the summer so that they are not burdened by worrying about affording rent, food, or other essentials. Since many public interest externships are unpaid, these grants are oftentimes the sole source of income for our members for the summer months. With the support of summer grants, PILF members go on to do invaluable work in their communities in the fields of criminal justice, civil rights law, domestic violence advocacy, environmental justice, and more. Past grantees have used their stipends to work at organizations such as Orleans Public Defenders, the MacArthur Justice Center, and St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
The WaveStarter campaign is an important source of fundraising for the Summer Grant Program. In recent years, interest in the program and the demand for grants has increased. It is now more imperative than ever to ensure that this initiative is properly funded.
Thank you so much to our donors! Your support for Tulane's public interest students is helping to shape future leaders in the legal world and beyond. This program could not exist without our supporters and we are deeply grateful for every cent raised.
